BIOS:
Aaron
Burnett:
Aaron Burnett began his musical training at the age six when
he joined the Regina Lions Band and pursued an interest in the alto
saxophone, as Aaron was learning the basic techniques of the
saxophone his interests shifted from wind instruments to percussion
instruments.
Aaron has been a devoted percussionist since the age of seven
and has studied with many world class teachers such as Ted Warren,
Jon MacCaslin, Jody Mario Chris Worthington and Dave Sabine. Aaron
progressed as a musician and began to study piano and music theory
as an element of his musical interests.
Aaron is the percussion section instructor for the intermediate
and beginner concert bands.
Kelly
Sandchuk:
Kelly is excited to be working with the Regina Lions Band.
She had the wonderful privilege of being part of the Lions band when
she was growing up and is looking forward to sharing her experiences
with a younger generation. Currently, Kelly is working toward a BFA
in acting from the University of Regina. She has just finished her
first year and is looking forward to performing with the Second Year
Company’s production in the winter semester of 2009. Kelly also
has a B.Mus. in performance on bass clarinet. She plays with many
Regina ensembles including the Regina Symphony Orchestra and the
semi-professional Regina Winds.
Kelly also had the pleasure of playing clarinet/bass clarinet for
the Globe Theatre’s production of Just So. She has also traveled
to the Czech Republic, where she had was able to take part in master
classes at an international level. Her latest endeavor in music will
be a newly formed ensemble dedicated to the performance of new
music.
Kelly will be the section instructor for the Beginner Clarinet
Section.
KPhilip
Yathon:
Philip Yathon was born and raised in Regina, and started his musical
life in Lion's Band where he played tuba. Since then, he has played
tuba and bass trombone in various groups, including the National
Youth Band, U of R concert and jazz ensembles, the Lion's concert,
marching, and jazz band, the Dubuque Iowa Drum and Bugle Corps, and
the Regina Symphony Orchestra. He is currently entering his fourth
year of music performance on tuba at the University of Regina.
Rick
Harris:
Rick
is a prominent member of the Saskatchewan music scene having lived
and performed in both Regina and Saskatoon for many years. He
has been active as a classical musician, performing with the
Saskatoon Saxophone Quartet and both the Saskatoon and Regina
Symphony Orchestras. He is also in high demand with his own
jazz ensembles as well as freelancing with other groups
including: The Bob Moyer Big Band, The Temptations, Lou
Christie and the Drifters.
From 1999 to 2004 Rick worked
with "Princess Cruises" filling the woodwind chair in the
Princess Orchestra and the Princess Show Band. Rick holds a
Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Woodwinds from the University
of Alberta and a Master's Degree in Jazz studies from the University
of North Texas.
He now lives in Regina wher he
operates the Rich Harris Music Studio providing private music
lessons and jazz performances.
Cyprian
Henry
Cyprian
started playing percussion with the Lions Band at the age of 12.
Within two years he was involved in many different groups between
the high school music programs of Campbell Collegiate, and the Lions
Band Program. Cyprian has performed in jazz bands, marching bands,
concert bands, and drum corps and has enjoyed making a lot of noise
along the way. Currently, Cyprian is in his second year of a Music
Performance degree at the U of R.
Charity
Putman
Charity Putman is currently completing
her final semester at the UofR in the Bachelor of Music program,
specializing in tuba performance. Her exposure to wind band music
began at age six when she joined her local community band, leading
her to pursue music as a career. She has performed in a number of
university ensembles including the UofR Concert Band, Wind Ensemble,
Orchestra, and Tuba Ensemble; and has studied with John Griffiths,
Scott Whetham, Mark Preece and Richard Raum.
Spending a semester in England has
also enriched Charity's musical experience, exposing her to the
British brass band tradition which she is continuing to enjoy with
the Queen City Brass Band this fall. She has also taught as a
sessional sight and ear instructor with the Sask. Choral Federation
for the '07/'08 teen chor camps. Charity is an active freelance
musician and is thrilled to be a part of the Lions Band's upcoming
season! Charity will be the section instructor for the intermadiate
Low brass.
Laura
Pettigrew
Laura Pettigrew received her Masters of
Music in Composition and her Bachelor of Music, majoring in
composition from the University of Regina. studying with Dr. Tom
Schudel. As a composer, Laura is an Associate Composer of the
Canadian Music Centre, a member of the Canadian League of Composers,
SOCAN, and IAWM. She has works published with ALRY and Kendor
Publications in addition to self-published works. Publications
include “Legends ALRY, 2009”; “Vega, Kendor 2008”, “Winter
Solstice ALRY, 2007; “Spirits of the Land, AlRY 2004, “Picc’in
Suite” ALRY 2001, “Latar Semplice” ALRY 1997, “Tulips/
Daisies” and “Springtime” Kendor, 2006 and “Cool Breeze”
Kendor 2005. In 2008, Laura Received a Saskatchewan Arts Board Grant
to write four works: one for the RSO Chamber Players and two Chinese
instrumentalists based on the history of Tunnels of Moose Jaw; a
band work for O’Neill High School Band, director Kory Gibbs; a
work for the trio “Contrasts” based on the prairie landscape,
titled “Grasslands”; and a work for the Meininger Trio, from
Germany. At the request of the RSO Chamber Players, a new
orchestral work, “Fieldstone Inn” was premiered February 13,
2008. Also in response to a national call in 2005 from the RSO
for new works Laura’s work “In the King’s Court, The
Marketplace” received its world premiere April 13, 2006 at
Government House. Further in 2001 Laura received a commission from
Dr. Tom Schudel for a work for flute for his wife, Jane. The
work titled “Enaj” which was a serial composition received its
world premiere May 16, 2004 at which time “Legends of Leah” for
alto flute was also premiered. Laura’s work “Agape” for
wind ensemble received its world premiere April 12, 2001.
Laura has new solo works premiered each year in the Saskatchewan and
Regina Music Festival (two new works 2008, three new works in
2007/06 and four new works in 2004); A selection of Laura’s
solo works were selected for the SMFA syllabus 04/06 and 07/09;
In addition she has received commissions for solo, band,
ensemble and choral works in Canada and the United States; Recent
commissions: January 2008, Steve Pollock ,Pittsburgh PA, a work for
tenor saxophone; September 2006, Jennifer Tenford, saxophone work
for National Saxophone Conference, February 2007; December
2006, “Euterpe Ensemble”; January 2007 - “Regina Ladies
Choir” choral work to commemorate their 75th anniversary
wherein the, premiere will be at their annual spring concert in May
2008. This follows a commission from the Regina Ladies Choir
in 2004 for a choral work to celebrate Saskatchewan‘s 100th
anniversary, which was premiered May 28/05; 2002. Further Laura
received a Saskatchewan Arts Board Grant in 2002 for three new
works, for wind ensemble/band, Flute Choir and for Orchestra. -
Purple Skies”, “Mayan Prophesies”, “Skat”,”Spirits of
the Land” (published 2004) and “Moments in Brazil”
As a flutist,
Laura has continued her pedagogical studies by attending
MasterClasses with world renowned flutists, Stephen Preston, William
Bennett and Susan Hoeppner. She performs as a soloist and also
in the Harp and Flute Duo “On Whispering Winds”, and a Flute and
Guitar Duo with Sheldon Arvey. Feb. 8/08 she performed with
internationally renowned sound artist, Gordon Monahan in concert
wherein he presented and premiered new works for Theremin and
Piano in addition to other works as the culmination of his artist in
residence at the University of Regina, Media Arts. In
2000/02, Laura performed with the National Flute Choir and the ALRY
Flute Choir at the National Flute Association Conventions. In
addition in 2002, Laura was a teaching assistant at the
International Masterclass “Wildacres Flute Retreat” in North
Carolina.
Laura founded
and conducts the student flute choir, “Sounds of Silver”, who
recorded two C.D.’s in 2000, performed for the Lt. Governor, and
Governor General in 2000 and had the honour of performing for Prince
Charles April 26, 2001, at which time her Brass Fanfare, “Fanfare
for the Royal Family” was premiered. As a clinician and
adjudicator, Laura spends a portion of her time traveling and
working. Laura was a board member for the Regina Musical Club for
four years and in 2007 took on a board position with the Regina
Music Festival, over and above her other volunteer positions with
Carmichael Outreach, Regina Christian School and most recently
fundraising for SSYO. Laura maintains a large studio of
private students and is a sessional lecturer for the Music Dept. at
the University of Regina (as needed). Laura currently resides
in Regina and is the proud mother of two sons, Joshua (published
poet) and Luke (musician - saxophone/marching baritone; paralegal)
